Welcome to the first newsletter of LIFE Resilient Forests

Climate change is increasing droughts in many parts of Europe and is making forests ecosystems less resilient to environmental disturbances.

Coordinated by Universitat Politècnica de Valencia, LIFE Resilient Forests promotes a replicable forest management approach at watershed scale, to improve forest resilience to wildfires, water scarcity, environmental degradation and other effects induced by climate change.
Watch the first three episodes of our webseries
In this series of videos filmed during a trip inside the Parc Natural Sierra Calderona  in Valencia, IIAMA-UPV researchers María González Sanchis and Antonio Del Campo show us the tangible effects of climate change on the local ecosystems and how a sustainable management approach can increase forest resilience, while creating opportunities for the local population.
More videos coming up soon!
Episode 1- The Riverbed
What happens to surface and groundwaters up in the mountains directly affects the availability of water resources for urban populations and for agriculture in the valleys underneath. More

Episode 2 - The Solarium
Just after entering the park, we stopped at a once popular picnic and leisure area for the citizens of Valencia, which has become an arid and dusty land in less than ten years. More
Episode 3 - The Big Old Tree
“El Pi de La Bassa” was the oldest tree in the park. The long and intense drought of 2014 severely stressed the tree, which was then attacked by the pine beetle and finally felled by a strong windstorm in 2016. More
Developing A Guide for Forest Managers
Resilient Forests is developing a decision support tool to introduce climate change adaptation strategies in forest management across Europe. This will be based on a proven approach already applied in Spain. More
Defining the main indicators for the development of the decision support tool
At the latest project meeting, partners discussed about the indicators which will be analised and integrated into the decision support system. In this tool the different hydrological, fire-risk, and climate change models will be directly related to each other. More
Coupling water, fire and climate resilience with biomass production in forestry to adapt watershed to climate change
The scientific background and one of the methodologies behind LIFE Resilient Forests were presented at the European Biomass Conference and Exhibition held last May in Lisbon. This study analyses to which extent semi-arid forest management for water is effective and viable at catchment scale, and how it can be improved when combined with other benefits, such as biomass production and fire risk diminishing.
